About Our Pastor

Kevin L. Smith, began serving as pastor of Watson Memorial Baptist Church on the first Sunday in February 2004. He is a former Martin Luther King, Jr. Fellow and is currently a candidate for the Ph.D. degree at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His dissertation will concentrate on the response of Black Baptist denominations to Black Nationalism in the 1960s.

Pastor Smith is a professor at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and became the first African-American ever to be elected first vice president of the Kentucky Baptist Convention November 14, 2006. 

He is a graduate of Hampton University, in Hampton, Virginia and the Church of God Theological Seminary, in Cleveland, Tennessee. Pastor Smith has served as an associate pastor, senior pastor, chaplain and short-term missionary. He has been a conference speaker for Life Way Christian Resources and various Baptist State Conventions. He is married to the former Patricia Moore and has three children.

Pastor Smith has served as an adjunct instructor at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, Beulah Heights Bible College in Atlanta, Georgia, and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri.

He is a member of the Organization of American Historians, the American Academy of Religion, and the American Society of Church History. He has served as a project co-chair of the African American Southern Baptist History Project.

 Pastor Smith wrote an article that was published in the journal of the Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. An essay, “Slavery in Early Puritan Massachusetts”, will be published in an upcoming collection by Heritage Press of Bowie, Maryland and he has presented papers at various academic conferences in the United States and Canada

Since coming to Watson he has sought to clearly teach the Word of God, deepen the worship experience, and has lead the church in the building of a 1 million dollar multi-purpose building.
